  1. First answer pretty much got it, but the main reason is the atmosphere gives a smooth appearance to the planet.  Also, the surface of the earth is three quarters water, and the features on the land areas are small enough that they don't stand out.


  2. Usually it's because of the distance. Even from a thousand meters up, details on the surface looks extremely flat. It's a bit like asking why a speck of dust isn't a noticable bump at 50 yards distance.

  3. because it is so large, so all defects look tiny, and there are the various layers of atmosphere that are basically spherical, which give it a smooth look

  4. A photograph is 2D so whatever is on it is 2D so it cant capture the 3D features.

  5. Because real life is three dimensional but a photograph is only two dimensional.
