Why does the fire truck come before the ambulance?

It is due to dispatching.  The FD are more locally located and can get there quicker as every neighborhood has one.  The ambulance is usually contracted out to a private company and is centrally located in a way to reach all of the FDs.  Fireman usually are there to administer the "First" aid.

this is not always true, it all depends on who is closer to who gets there first..

firefighters also act as first responders (in most places).. if the firetruck is closer to the call then they will arrive first....

Fire spread. They have to hurry.  Or else there work get bigger and more dangerous by the minute.

First order is the Police followed by Fire Department. If one or the other determines medical aid is needed, and ambulance is dispatched.

Medical calls often out number fire calls in most areas. When tasked with a call many times the ambulance may already be involved in a call/run and can add to the delay. Were the Fire Department more times than not will have staff and equipment available for dispatch. Yes they are neighborly based and since they are public servants they are hopefully properly staffed were as the ambulance may be a private service and will be staffed just well enough to cover a area but thin enough that downtime or available to respond time is kept to a acceptable minimum company standard.  While a Fire Department will usually only have to serve one community the ambulance company if a private for profit business may be serving many communities also

in houston there are 4 times as many fire trucks as ambulances and they ar nto willign to have mroe ambualances so they send a fire truck out with a trained "EMT" if there is not ambualcnea at eh fire house... silly I know but then again we only have about 50% of teh cop to citzen ration as comapred to ohter large citys because we havde idiot leaders who spend money on everything but total public care of normal people( ie police fire and trash)
