If this is true, why do we pay full price for gas? Should we not

  1. Ethanol is not cheaper than gas.

It's used to reduce consumption of oil/gasoline.

  2. because it is blended with 10 percent ethanol.as why we pay the same for 90 +10,you can get 100 percent gasoline, but it is more per gallon.

  3. You don't say where you live, but it's likely that you live in an RFG area.  The EPA mandates through the Clean Air Act that certain high smog areas of the country (PADD's) must have an oxygenate in their gasoline to promote proper combustion.  Ethanol is the oxygenate of choice, now that the gov't has removed protections from using MTBE, which has a bad habit of contaminating groundwater.

PADD areas are most of the Eastern Seaboard, West coast and densely populated midwestern cities.  If you live there, you've been running ethanol or MTBE since the mid 90's.

Ethanol is a good additive for gasoline.  It increases combustion efficiency and octane.  All makes of vehicles since the mid 90's have been able to run ethanol fuels without problem.  Some companies used methanol for a while and it does mess with rubbers and plastics, but ethanol is less destructive.  I have driven 3 cars over 100,000 miles each on ethanol added gasoline and never had a fuel related issue with any of them.

As for a breakdown, do you have a breakdown on what wheat costs in your bread?  How much the dairies saved by limiting the butterfat in your milk?  The cost of beans in your chili?  The cost of the aluminum castings in your car?  You pay for a finished product.

  4. Years ago the gasoline companies came up with gasohol, a gasoline/ethanol mixture. They promoted it as cheaper than straight gasoline.

Fast forward from the late 70s early 80s to just a few years ago.

In order to burn gasoline more cleanly and reduce emissions ethanol was added and the gasoline companies had to charge more for it because the government made them put it in.

I bet most people forgot how much cheaper gasohol was.

  5. "QT is correct! except as a further note, ethanol in gasoline is extremely hard on fuel pumps, injectors, and fuel pressure regulators. this is a fuel that creates small run-ability issues. i wouldn't recommend continued usage in your vehicle.
