Why does the human hair turn gray as people age?

I know it looses protein or something .Are there any ways to prevent it ?

  1. your hair turns to gray because your body loses melanin as you grow old. melanin is a chemical that your body uses to protect yourself from harmful UV rays which came from the sun. your skin also have melanin that's why white skinned persons get sunburn easily cause they have a low melanin rate. and your hair really doesn't turn to gray it becomes white it just looks gray because it mixes with the other black hair making it look gray.


  2. It doesn't actually turn grey, it simply loses the melalin pigment (which is indeed a protein) leaving only the colour of the keratin.  It happens when the stem cells in the hair folicles that produce pigment cells die.  

    Unfortunately it's a natural part of aging.  You can't stop the pigment stem cells from dieing, though it will vary from person to person how long they live till.  The only way to prevent grey hair is by using a hair dye.
