Why does the internet mess up when the phone rings?

We have different phone provider from our internet(at&t and time warner cable) all of a sudden every time the phone rings our internet connection goes off. wthafuc? They aren't the same company. It's getting on my nervous. Any help?

  1. Is your AT&T telephone cordless? (2.4Ghz?)

    Is your Cable modem wireless? (2.4 Ghz Wireless G?)

    If that is the case, both cordless/wireless systems may be interfereing with each other.

    To verify, replace cordless phone with a corded (not wireless) phone.  If that phone works without causing a problem with your cable Internet, then wireless interference is the problem.

    If that is the case, put more distance between router and phones.  Otherwise, you may need to switch to 5.8 Ghz or DECT 6 cordless phone.

    P.S.

    If you use wireless phones with landline, it a good idea to have a corded phone as backup for emergencies in case of power outage - most cordless phones will not work during power outage (unless backud-up with UPS system).
