  1. because of the angular position of the earth on it axis.

  2. as the earth rotates, the amount of sunlight that hits the earth changes. because of this, the nights and days change their length of time.

the earth tilts a little during the summer, and so in the northern hemisphere it is more oriented towards the sun, and the southern is enshrouded in night. the opposite happens in the winter. a common misconception is that during the summer the earth is closer to the sun-that's a false idea (the orbit around the sun is ALMOST circular)

  3. Because the earth moves further from the sun

  4. The lenght of the day does not change any at all at the equator.

  5. The earth is a globe.  Bigger around at the very center (equator) and less as it rounds toward the poles.  As it tilts toward or away from the sun it will have more or less exposure depending which  pole is tilted toward the sun.  You can take a soccer ball and a lamp to demonstrate a model of how it works.  Noticing the light and dark and the "shadow" effect.
