Why does the light come on when I turn the power off on electronics

What could be the purpose of this feature? There's just a bunch of lights beaming at me in the dark. I end up putting masking tape on some of them. Besides, doesn't it waste electricity?

answer to your 1st question this is so you could find them in the dark, and to let you know they are on "stand by " and ready to go. no useful reason to be on.
