Question:

Why does the metal in my body not set off airport metal detectors?

I flipped an ATV last year and have 17 screws in my knee, and a titanium rod in my femur (thigh bone) that's 44cm long x 2cm diameter. That's 17" by 2".

So it's a lot of metal.

I often fly, I'm just wondering why I never set off the metal detectors? There must be some reason.

  1. the metal detectors only detect specific kinds of metals. surgical steel isn't picked up either

if you had a titanium weapon- that was all titanium, you'd probably get away with it.
