Okay, I'm in Houston, TX, and from my window, the moon looks looks yellow, almost gold (kind of like the true-color picture of Venus on Wikipedia)

Why does it look like that?

  1. Since it is closer to the horizon, the light reflected from the moon is passing through more of the atmosphere than it does when overhead.  The moisture and other impurities in the atmosphere act to scatter the light more in the yellow to red wavelengths, thus producing that odd color.  Notice that as it gets higher, the coloration will become more whitish.

  2. It's a harvest moon. That's what they call it here in Alabama.  But tonight is a full moon anyway.
