Why does the moong dal sprout only when soaked overnight?

Not only moong dal but any seed / s require water to imbibe to set the process of germination rolling .

A  dry seed is an inactive or dormant seed with equally dormant embryo inside .

To activate it water is the most essential element .

With out water NO seed can germinate and growth cannot begin.

Moong Dal is not an exception to this rule
