  1. in Feudal, people alws take the surname of The King, and Nguyen is the last dynesty of VN feudal, so the surname ( not name ) Nguyen so popular nowaday

In VN, if u see a name Nguyen Van A, so Nguyen is the family name, and Van A is the name, not like in US.

  2. uhm, u should ask why the last name nguyen is so popular in Vietnam, not just the name,

Why is Jones and Smith so popular in the US?

Answer....more Smith and Jones people came to the US than any other family. (I don't intend to sound like a wise guy, just adding a bit of humor.)

However I agree that Dani Ng's answer sounds logical.

I was in Viet Nam from "65to"67.

There is a street in Saigon named Nguyen Hue.  Nguyen Hue is pronounced " Wean Way". Nguyen Hue Street is (or was) referred to as the street of flowers because of so many flowers in the center of the sreet. .

Nguyen Hue Street was lined with vendors selling their goods.

Most of the articles that they sold were available in the PX  and were still in the original packages.  Some people would refer to this as theft.  However most Viet Namese were extremely poor and made a living the only way they knew how.
