I've never read the book. But are the Sioux artifacts really authentic? Because they are in quotes, I suspect they aren't. So, maybe the picture of his grandfather is very real, and he doesn't want to share that, but the Sioux artifacts are fake, and he doesn't mind sharing that because it doesn't mean too much to him.
