It's the same with x^3 and x^2.999etc. Is it something to do with the log of a negative number? Or is it something far,far more sinister?

  1. you do mean " negative domain? "....y = x ^a = e^[a ln x], if a is not an integer...those the domain needs to be positive....x^(2.0001) = x² [ x^(0.001)] and thus you need an even root, which demands x ≥ 0
