Question:

Why does the quality of storebought pitted fruit decline during summer?

Peaches, nectarines and plums from the supermarket seem to be at their best in early June, just after they first appear. However, over the course of that month they become increasingly mushy and less tart. By midsummer the things are nauseating to bite into, though they often still look deceptively fresh on the outside. What is the reason for this remarkable decrease in the taste quality of pitted fruit?

  1. Its because the cell of the fruits divide faster at the optimum temperature of 37o Centigrade and that is the reason why their quality declines gradually during the summer season in storage condition.

  2. By mid summer they are coming out of cold storage where they have been put on hold. They taste like so much cardboard. Buy local fruit, check farmer's markets, orchards, etc. If you can't find the peaches you want yet, buy the strawberries instead until you can buy the fresh peaches. Don't waste your money on the junk in the grocery stores.
