Why does the road look wet on a hot day?

Like but when you get there it is dry?

  1. Its the heat reflected by the surface.


  2. It's like a mirage in the desert. The heat coming off the surface plays games with the eyes.

  3. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with evaporated oil from the road mixed with the heat.  If you look in a parking lot, you don't see the wet look as often, but on roads that get more use seem to be more prone to having the wet look.  It is probably fumes rising off of the pavement.
