Gravity is the obvious answer.  

Perhaps you should make allowances for this force by attaching the roof to the structure in a secure manner.  How you do this is highly dependent upon both the materials used for the roof and the materials available.  For instance fiber materials  like string or rope  would work well fro a grass roof but  poorly for a steel or shingle roof.
