Occasionally there is a weather event or just a peculiar change that makes the entire air environment look very amber or yellow. What causes this striking visual change?

I am in the pacific northwest.

  1. I don't know, but if I had to make an educated guess, I would say pollution.

  4. The longer the wavelength, the further it penetrates through the atmosphere.

The shorter wavelengths are scattered, and that is why the sky appears blue, the blue colors that all filter down across the entire sky.

But at sunset, the sunlight travels a longer pathway.  As the sun begins to set it often goes from yellow through orange and finally, only the longest red rays travel the distance.

I have noticed that clouds especially during Tornado conditons cause the atmosphere to acquire a yellowish tinge.  Greenish-yellow is even worse.

If you see that, watch out for a tornado.  Danger is more immediate if there is sudden ferocious hail.

    ROYGBIV

    Red longest wavelength,  Violet shortest.

So, in order of decreasing wavelength and increasing frequency:

Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet.

High frequency has the most energy, another reason that UV will burn you badly.

So will the others if you overexpose yourself.

As you know, even infrared rays will make you hot.

But the UV can alter the DNA in your skin sufficiently to produce cancer.  After all, UV is even used for killing germs....

  5. I Have never seen this occur before. I used to live in the pacific nw. Vancouver washington. my favorite place is seaside oregon. Anyway it is possible that the light from the sun is somehow causing it. Or something is wrong with your sight..

  6. It has to do with the refraction of light from the sun.

Edit - Oh, Danny has it in his article.
