Why does the sky underneath a rainbow look darker than the sky above a rainbow?

Everytime I see a rainbow the sky underneath the spectrum of colours is darker than the sky surrounding the outer side of the rainbow (the red). I just want to know why this is!?

  1. It's called Alexander's Dark Band. I'm not sure of the exact cause but if you look up that phrase you'll find out.
