Why does the spongy mesophyll possess fewer chloroplasts than palisade mesophyll?

  1. Hi Partoa,

    I have not personally studied this area; however, below are two links that I believe help to explain the differences between the spongy and palisade mesophyll.

    It appears from this information that the palisade mesophyll would have more exposure to the sun's light and, therefore, would require more chloroplasts to provide more food for the plant.
