Why does the ump give a wide if the ball is way over the batsman's head?

logically, the ball is straight and in line with stumps then why is it called a "WIDE"?

It can be called a No-ball..if they don't want to term it something new.

  1. it is given a wide because a batsman cannot hit a ball over his head he cant reach it

    a ball which is not reached by a batsman is called a wide


  2. wide means the delivery which is out of reach of batsman. SO when the ball goes way over batsman head its out of reach so it is termed as wide & not as No Ball because No Ball is illeagal delivery

  3. It's called a wide because the batsmen can not reach the ball properly.

    A wide is when a ball is too wide of the batsmen that he can not reach the ball preoperly.

    A no-ball is when you step over the line or your baowling action is not acceptable.

    In regards to your question, I don't think anything should change, it should still be called a wide.

  4. Wide here means far from the stumps  that should be the aim .
