Why does the western side of Michigan have so much hard water?

I swear, I hate taking a shower when I visit my folks in Grand Rapids!

All I know is that hard water has a LOT of minerals and you need water softener....  It's a pain in the @ss to deal with.  You always feel slimy getting out of the shower and the water smells funny.

The Thumb and Up North all have hard water - well water - too!

What exactly do you mean?

I love going up to Traverse City but I had the water smell up there.  It's disgusting.  I'll take city water any day.
