Basing this on a movie, why does Alaska recieve 30 continous, uninterrupted days of night, as well as like 10 or so complete days of sunshine?

  1. Earth is tilted 23.5 Deg

During July the earth is facing its north toward the sun, at equator the earth is rounded but at poles the earth is flat.

Thus when north pole is titled toward sun at 23.5 Deg, its always facing the sun as earth is going around. Thus north pole gets 6 months of Day and 6 months of night (during Winter).

As part of Alaska is above 90-23.5 = 66.5 Deg (artic circle) they get few days of Complete nights and other with total sunshine. Even if its on the other side of the sun still it gets sun light.

  2. "The longest days come around the summer solstice, June 21.

In the southernmost Inside Passage, around Ketchikan, the sun is above the horizon for about 18 hours then. In southcentral Alaska, Anchorage gets 19.5 hours of sunlight. Fairbanks in the Interior, gets 21 hours, and Barrow, at the northern edge of the state, has 24 hours of daylight.

Winter brings 24-hour darkness to only the part of Alaska above the Arctic Circle. Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks, Nome and the rest of the state all get some sunlight, however pale, for a few hours each day. The longest nights occur around the winter solstice, Dec. 21."

ok I've searched and I still can't find a good description of WHY. But it is location, location, location!  :)
