Why does this happen??

Maybe 2/3 times a week, I get either a pain in my chest, or one under my shoulder blade with pain in the same shoulder. The pain gradually increases, and then is relieved as I burp. I burp every few seconds for a few minutes and then have the hiccups!!

Does anyone actually know (no guesses) why this happens and if I should be worried??

  1. i had exactly the same thing a month back, i had never suffered from heartburn or indigestion so i went to the doctors and i was worried about the sharp pain. He gave me medication that theu use for IBS, i thought that a bit weird, i took it and never had it return

  2. This may be nothing more than a little bit of indigestion, but recurrent or severe chest pain is ALWAYS something that you need to discuss with a doctor.

  3. Vagus nerve (Cranial nerve- X) might have compressed somewhere in the shoulder. Vagus nerve starts from the brain passes through pharynx, trachea, esophagus and reaches up to the diaphragm.

Hiccups (hiccough, singultus) are repeated involuntary spasms of the diaphragm followed by sudden closure of the glottis, which checks the inflow of air and causes the characteristic sound. Transient episodes are very common. Persistent (> 2 days) and intractable (> 1 mo) hiccups are uncommon but quite distressing.

Hiccup is also caused by the irritation of vagus nerve.

    Consult a neurologist.

  4. i think you should do a check up at hospital .

the problem may be that your air tube from your lungs is blocked and thus you feel pain . then , it will suddenly open ( the tube) and you let it out as burp!!!

  5. Sounds like wind.  I went to the doctors the other day and said, "Can you give me something for wind."  So he gave me a kite.
