No, Mr. Woods did not say that hockey isn't a sport.  He said that nobody watches it. . . which is pretty true in the big scheme of things.  Hockey, in my opinion, is the greatest game, but it's hard on casual fans.  There are a lot of rules and intricacies that don't make a lot of sense without an explanation.  You don't have to know what a corner-back is in football to understand that the end-zone is where you want to be.

He's just not into it.  It's really not a big deal.  I mean he's American...as a rule they love baseball and football.  I'm Canadian and I love hockey.  People in India love cricket.  And most of the world loves soccer (which is a sport I'll never get).

I believe he said "I don't think anyone really watches hockey" or something like that on an over the phone interview. Then when the reporters asked him about the comments in an in person interview, he defended himself by saying that he just doesn't watch hockey on TV but likes it in person. He goes on to say that hockey is a fascinating sport and that what he said over the phone was supposed be a joke not knowing people would take it seriously.
