  1. Your enamel is made of calcium phosphate. This is sensitive to acid as it would dissolve in contact with it. It would dissolve ever so slightly but after contact day after day, it will damage your teeth.

Coca-cola has phospheric acid and that has been known to dissolve calcium based structures such as bones and teeth.

" tooth whitening product with an overall low pH can put enamel at risk for decay or destruction by demineralization. Consequently, care should be taken and risk evaluated when choosing a product which is very acidic."

  2. Because the natural pH of saliva is 7.4 similar to your blood (slightly basic).  The base in the tooth is to maintain the normal pH levels in the body.  If it were slightly acidic, a neutralization reaction would occur which would not only throw the chemistry of your mouth out of balance and give you a weird taste,  but you would look pretty funny foaming at the mouth.
