They need it to issue you a W-2G for for gambling winnings in case you win an amount over $600.00 on a bet like an exacta, trifecta etc.  It should be safe to provide this on a secure page.  Hopefully TVG keeps this date safe on their system.

Due to current state and federal gambling laws I cannot imagine that you will be able to sign up for any advance deposit wagering service without giving this info. I have given my SS # out without any problem. Just be careful it is a legit site! TVG is fine as is youbet.com, xpressbet.com, twinspires.com. There are others, too, but make sure it is a legit site!

Do not give them your SSN. I use betonline.com and they are great. Very easy to sign up and use. Good luck

I haven't had any problems with TVG.  Their parent company is the same as TV Guide, so it's not like they are a fly by night outfit.  They have to have SSN because they are handling potentially large amounts of money.  The IRS tends to be interested in large financial transactions, so they need it in case they have to file a winning bet in excess of $600.  It does happen from time to time on a trifecta or pick 4 type of wager.
