Question:

Why does universal ac adapter not charge while computer is on?

My Ac adapter just died, so I went and bought a universal one. BUT this thing will only charge when the computer is off. My computer dies really quickly and I usually just left the old one plugged in and it would still keep my computer on. as soon as I turn on the computer, the charger turns off and I have to re-plug it in somewhere else for it to turn on (but the comp HAS to be off) Is the universal one supposed to be doing that?

  1. This is NOT normal. A proper "universal" adapter should work exactly the same as your original.

I suspect there is an issue with either the current or voltage being supplied BY the universal adapter TO the computer. Check your owner's manual of the PC and check the voltage and current requirements; then check to see that your universal is set to supply the same voltage and current. If either voltage or current being supplied is lower than the orignal, your computer will not properly charge.
