Why does university net connection sucks?

at a school computer too.....did a dsl report on it....

17 291 (kilobits per second) download

upload is 14633...

totally can get better service on cable or something like that

i guess it works though.....blahhhhhhh

it crashes though sometimes for a few minutes

it drives me CRAZY

i understand all these people need to use it and c**p but its ridiculous i'm sure they earn millions in tuition and they can't get a faster internet??????

man alive they can afford T3 internet for crying out loud and all they got is this ? this is like a broadband connection i'm on basically

You have one, maybe 10mbps, connection.  You have maybe 1,000 students sharing it.  Each one gets 1kbps bandwidth at times.  The school buys internet service from the local provider - schools seldom pay to have their own cable built (T3 isn't very fast - and pulling a 6" fiber from the CO to the school could cost a few million - or more.)

Schools don't wanna spend money on improving something that is already satisfactory.

They actually have a cable or better connection at Universities.

Here's the catch: Add 1000 computers to share that one connection. Add a proxy to block non-education websites and what you get is close to dial-up speeds.

It's just a matter of fact, there is no other way for them to route the internet and share a connection, while controlling what is accessed and still give everyone access to the school servers too.
