Why does water evaporate less in high humidities?

Is it because there is already a lot of water in the air compared to low humidities where there is little? If there is a lot of water in the air, less can be evaporated before the air reaches saturation point.. Is this correct? Thanks in advance.

  1. yea, you got it right, same reason you can only dissolve so much sugar into water, there comes a point that the material you are trying to suspend stuff in just cant hold any more


  2. Because the air in the atmophere already has lot of water . If it is dry it will take the water vapour

  4. The abundance of water vapour over a sea or moist surface produces a blanketing effect preventing the water molecules escaping from the surface.Particularly when the air becomes saturated over the evaporating surface, evaporation is almost stopped.

  5. You basically answered your own question. When there is high humidity, there is low water vapor capacity. That means less evaporation will occur, but more condensation can be expected. That certainly true with 100% humidity, where the dew point is equal to the air temperature.
