Why does water irritate your eye? And is water bad for your eye?

water is not bad for your eye at all - pure water that is.

tap water is usually filled with chemicals that (in most cases) doesnt hurt you...but in some areas it can get really bad.

if you get an actual chemical in your eye (detergent, household product,etc) you should wash your eye with water for up to 15-20 mins...just like in a science lab.  they have an eyewash and you sit there for 20 minutes while water jolts into your eye. its good for flushing the bad bugs away =P

water irritates one's eye depending on purity of it n the speed at which one hit it with eyes. Water is good for regularly cleaning eyes. Infact, by nature itself, water keeps on flowing out of eyes so as to remove ny foreign body which may have invaded one's eye due to dust n pollution....

Tap water has chlorine in it which could irritate your eyes.

Also, your tears have a low percentage of salt in them (saline) which regular water doesn't have.
