Why does yahoo alerts tell me that they don't recognize my number?

when i try to set up a mobile alert for my phone, it says 'this number is not recognized with the carrier you listed.' i know my phone number and i know my carrier. any ideas why this is happening?

have you registered with yahoo giving them you phone number and email address?also give them the name of your telephone company and long distance carrier the cell phone carrier might be different then your home
