Why does yahoo answers censor w.a.n.k but not wanker?

I came across this question that calls mccain a wanker:

...but a quick search shows the root verb is usually censored or disguised. I find this strange as in Australia the verb is just slang for m********e, whereas the adjective is usually an offensive insult.

Do Americans have some different interpretation that makes one ok but not the other?

  1. The verb is more offensive. This is because it implies the action of masturbating. Still.

However, I would argue that the adjective is less powerful and the common usage of wanker has come away from the root meaning. One could use the word wanker interchangebly with idiot or any other mild insult. Obviously the tone and context will effect the gravity of the word.

Maybe, I'm not sure. Good question.

Also it could just be an error by Yahoo answers.
