Why does yawning make ears pop?

When going in a plane or uphill and downhill in a car, yawning seems to relieve the pressure in people's ears- making them 'pop'. Anyone know why? Also, chewing seems to help as well. How does that work?

  1. It is because there's a vein that connects ears and nose.
