It's for an essay I have to write, so give me as many different reasons as possible. It would also be ok to post a link to a website that would answer my question.

  1. Basically it's voting power.  Taking into consideration Turkey's population, Turkey would get more MEP seats in the European parliament.

    Religion is also a factor.

This is a good source for your report but the reasons are purely political as I mentioned above.

  2. The EU is striving for financial superiority and thereby world control. The including of the fanatical muslim Jihad minded; controlled Turkey, would cause loss of forward inurtia.

  3. I'm doing the same thing. As far as ive learned, Merkel doesnt believe that Turkey belongs the the EU because by doing so the EU would lose great sums of money for its development and it would also ruin any sort of political and popular European unity . However, merkel supports an economic union with turkey and the consolidation of a stronger relationship. But thats it.

  4. Huge population.  Islam.  Turkey borders Iraq.  People are uncomfortable with the idea that the EU's borders would extend to Iraq.

  5. The EU would love to have Turkey as a member but some how fail to convince Europeans of the advantages a Turkish membership would have. People in Europe have a problem for many different reasons with many things -real or unreal- going on in Turkey. But Turkey plays a much bigger role in the Middle East as is commonly known. Also Turkey is a country with a huge tradition in every way. Don't forget that they ruled, once upon the time, half of Europe (all he way up to Vienna) and the country stretched east as far as India. Also it is the border to the Arab-World and a fairly moderate state when it comes to religion. (A lot of people would argue that point however) It is a secular country in any case.

Now Merkel and politicians like her have a lot of pressure from their voters in their respective countries. The Conservatives (and Merkel is the head of a Conservative Party in Germany) around Europe will try to keep Turkey out at all costs but realize the really need a stable Country in that region. A stable country with a stable government. Now, if Turkey were to become a member of the EU iIt would be much easier for Europe to influence the political processes of that country. Just imagine a country like Irak or Iran on the eastern boarder of Europe. How much influence would a Muslim-governed Country have on the situation on the Balkan (Kosovo- Serbia) Also the Greek-Turkish relations are still not the best and are kept under control through the EU.

There are many unsolved issues in the relation between the EU and Turkey. The biggest mistake was to promise Turkey a full memberhship and now having to try to wiggle out of that promise.

If Merkel and Politicians like her would be able to win an election with the promotion of Turkey into the EU they would to so today. That is unfortunately how politics work -from election to election.

    Hope that helps !?
