Question:

Why doesn't Cotto call Mayweather out?

I know it is not his style to call out people but if he expressed some interest in fighting Mayweather maybe Floyd will make it happen. Similar to what Hatton did. I am a big fan of both but Cottos answer of always saying i fight who Arum tells me to fight is getting a bit annoying.

  1. cuz cotto cant handle been defeated and going back down starting from ground zero again

  2. I have been wondering this myself for a while, every time he is asked the question he skirts around the issue as if he wants a few more easy fights before he takes on the main man, i think he should take a leaf out of Hattons book and say i want to be the main man now its my time lets have it. Its the fight we all want to see. Cotto and Margarito are the only ones with a chance, lets see if Floyd is as good as he thinks he is. I think he might be but unless he fights the best how will we know ?

  3. if hatton was a lot bigger, mayweather would've been afraid to take that fight... cotto is just the right size... mayweather don't want a beating... his excuse is that it wont create the money.... i know it will... everyone is demanding for this fight and it should happen.. this will prove to everyone who is the undisputed welterweight champion... and i can garuntee that it will make more money than the oscar/mayweather rematch.... but it will be boring just like any of mayweathers fight....

  4. He has called out mayweather... mayweather's response was the typical excuse given when ducking someone.

mayweather said that Cotto doesn't have the fanbase to fight mayweather.  In other words, the risk is greater than the reward.

You have to understand that certain top fighters won't fight someone that is too much of a risk for them.  Robinson refused to step into the ring with Burley;  Leonard avoided Pryor like the bubonic plague.  The difference between these greats and monkey mayweather is that mayweather doesn't have nearly the same resume of fighting top competition.  In fact, as good as mayweather seems, his list of beaten opponents is really poor.

I seriously doubt mayweather will ever fight the top competition ever again.  I hope I am wrong.

  5. I agree completely with mark andrew m here, there is not much i could add to that.

  6. Blog I have a lot fo respect for you but I disagree completely with you on this one.  I think a lot of you out there are too emotionally involved when you write about or observe boxing.  Professional boxing is a business.  First of all, Mayweather has beaten his competition quite handily and he has fought many of the best fighters fo his day.  Ray Leonard didnt fight everybody. Even Hagler never fought everybody. No one can ever fight everybody. Mayweather will probably fight Cotto someday and when he does it wont be Floyds first defeat. Cotto looked great against Gomez but come on, it was Gomez.  Do you think he would have looked like that against Margarito or De La Hoya? Please. Mayweather is the most talented fighter in the game and at 147 or 154 he will not lose. He has more money than he knows what to do with but it is still a business and ask de la hoya, the best always have their critics. Mayweather will beat 3 or 4 more fighters who are among the elite and people will still hate on him.  Recognize and respect the talent.  Who cares about his personality?

  7. mayweather just gave a recent excuse among many just yesterday..floyd says that cotto is not a household name and cotto cant fill the seats..you can see these comments on eastsideboxing.com ellebre, floyds adviser stated cotto is to much risk for a low reward..floyd also avoided margarito when floyd was with toprank..bob arum wanted 2 match up margo with floyd 4 years ago and arum offered floyd 8 million to fight margo..that was the biggest purse for floyd at that time..instead floyd paid a fine of 150k to get out of a contract with toprank and floyd picked and choosed 2 fight a washed up baldomir whom was 38 years old with over 10 losses...even shane mosley was calling floyd a coward for not fighting margo..here is the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOSYzIKJF...

  8. Cotto is wating for THE PEOPLE to call Mayweather out for him. It's a good strategy, if you want to get more buys. You get the people more hyped, therefore you get more MONEY. I'm not waiting for this fight as many other boxing fans are. Personally, I rather see Cotto vs De La Hoya(rumors are saying that De La Hoya wants to fight Cotto by December). We all know that Mayweather loves money, and I wouldn't be surprised if they are just building more hype and waiting a little long. They may have the fight set up already, they just want to get Cotto a little more famous.

  9. I've been feeling the same way.  Cotto can't rely on Bob Arum for a Mayweather fight because Arum and Floyd don't get along.  Floyd even stated on Friday Night Fights that he would love to fight him, but that Cotto would have to distance himself away from Arum because the two of them can't do business together.  I'm not saying that Cotto has to completely distance himself from Arum because thats his promoter, but he should at least call out Floyd instead of just letting Arum saying his whole speech about how "Floyd will never fight someone he can lose to."  The funny thing is that when Arum was promoting Floyd, I remember him saying that Floyd was the closest thing to Muhammad Ali that he had seen inside the ring.  If Cotto was smart, he would learn something from Floyd- before Mayweather's fight with De La Hoya, Floyd was smart enough to realize that Oscar and Bob Arum did not get along.  Back then, Arum was Floyd's promoter, so guess what Floyd did to get the Oscar fight?  He did what anyone would- he distanced himself from Arum and as a result, he got the biggest money making fight in history.  Cotto now needs to do something similar in order for him to get the fight with Floyd.

Blogbaba- Floyd does not need to CALL COTTO out because he is the best fighter in the world and he is the true welterweight champion of the world.  Cotto does his talking in the ring, but if he was smart enough, he would at least call Floyd out because he does not have anywhere near the leverage that Floyd has.  Like it or not, Floyd is on top right now and he is by far the bigger name.

    True L- very well said.

  10. because cotto doesnt want a loss on his record

  11. Once cotto keeps on winning his fights mr mayweather will have to fight him sooner rather than later or he will be always know as the man who avoided cotto.

  12. First off Cotto doesn't need to call Mayweather out, the rest of the boxing world is doing that for him.  The main reason is Cotto has more class than that, and doesn't need to call Floyd out.  Believe me Floyd knows Cotto's out there, and it appears Floyd is hoping that Cotto goes away.  I think if Cotto beats Margarito, Floyd will have to CALL COTTO out, Mayweather can get away with fighting old timers and lighter weight fighters for only so long, and the boxing public is pretty much fed up with it already.  Eventually Floyd will have to take on some decent welterweights.  If Mayweather holds true to form, odds are good Floyd will start at the top, and the would be Cotto or Margarito.  Either way, I think Floyd is in for a rough row to hoe, there is a lot of talent in the welterweight division, and Floyd cannot dominate there like he did in the lower weights.

One day Arum will tell Cotto to fight Mayweather, and then, believe me it will have been worth the wait.

  13. maybe cause he knows he aint ready for him yet!! he lacks defense thats why i thinkn hes dumping hes uncle who is training him right now and getting somebody else to show him new stuff.

tito trinidad never wnated to change trainer and let his dad train him for his whole career, his dad didnt know what to do when bhop and winky took him to school. maybe if he would have changed trainer he would improve and become an incredible boxer who can fight all types of boxers

  14. AMEN BROTHER, I have posted the same Q myself, but I guess he is that humble.

  15. Let me set the stage for the Cotto fans that make's excuses. PBF paid off his contract with Bob Arum because he was talking his money. Bob Arum and floyd Sr. are good friends. PBF fired both of there buts. I keep asking this question and the Cotto fans keep ducking it. I will put it out there again. Why want Cotto put the money up? This is not the first time Bob Arum had a fighte to dump him. Cotto camp sent Bruseles in because Cotto didn't want know part of him at 140. Bruseles trained with Cotto and his uncle. They say Cotto is not the calling out person. Why do his fans keep making him a call out person? Cotto skates around the question and blames it on Arum. At leats Hatton had the guts to calling him out on his own. The Margarito thing. Margo spent half his career, trying to get back on top, not PBF. What top guy has Margo beat. Clottey had a injured hand and still pull out a close decision. Margo is wash up and still trying to make a run.

  16. So, whats the big deal if Cotto doesn't call that idiot out? He doesn't need to do that. When the moment to fight him comes, then he will be speaking. Do we need another arrogant and stupid boxer talking smack and calling other boxers? That's Mayweather style, not Cotto.
