He was awesome! Tom Durkin is good, but there is nothing better than "down the stretch they come"

  1. that is the only part of his race call that is good. he is getting WAY TOO old for the booth, and he really has been messing up races that he has gotten to call. he does need to retire to be honest with you. he might call the races again this year for the meadowlands horse racing meet, but he still doesnt have it like he once did.

  2. Probably because ABC doesnt do the triple crown races anymore, it is NBC. I am not even sure that Dave Johnson is still calliing races. Personally I always used to like Marshall Cassidy in New york and I also think that Vic Stauffer is an awesome race caller. I am not sure how much longer durkin will be around, he is getting old and I am not sure his health is the best.

  3. You've got to be kidding. Durkin is an immortal race caller, one of the best ever, and Johnson was simply a gimmicky mediocre one-trick pony.

It's like comparing Vin Scully to John Sterling. Actually, apologies to Sterling, it's much much worse than that.

The "Down the Stretch they Come" didn't add anything to the race, IMO, and he used exactly the same call for a 12.5 claimer at the Meadowlands.

You can't even begin to compare the insight that Durkin brings to a race with Johnson.
