Question:

Why doesn't DirecTV recycle old set top boxes?

I have two Samsung set top boxes, neither of them work anymore. After spending hours trying to work out the issues with tech support the boxes are pronounced dead. So now I own these two receivers that are basically junk. But DirecTV doesn't want them back and won't recycle them. Does anyone recycle this stuff? Anyone petitioning to get DirecTV to be a responsible corporation?

  1. Junk yards buy/take old electronics graciously.  Often there is a small amount of gold in the circuitry (circuit traces, contacts, etc.)

  2. Basically those receivers ARE junk.  In this new HD world, there is little call for analog receivers and next year there will be no broadcasts (over the air, Satellite, cable) that are not digital. So even if Direct TV had ever had a policy to recycle old receivers (I do not believe they ever did) they would probably not continue that policy because there is no market for analog receivers anymore.
