Obviously, while South Ossetia is inside Georgia's borders, it is considered part of Georgia and has to follow its rules. However, the residents appear to be fairly united in not wanting to be a part of Georgia.
Why is Georgia so adamant about keeping this clearly unhappy region as part of its country? It will always have a difficult time with South Ossetia (and Abkhazia). Wouldn't it be in everyone's best interests to let them go (either become its own country or a part of Russia)? What does Georgia gain from defining its borders to include South Ossetia, other than an area of disgruntled residents that will always fight them?
