Question:

Why doesn't Ireland issue Americans a Work Holiday Visa?

Ireland offers young people from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan and New Zealand, the chance to work casually to enable them to spend an extended holiday in Ireland. Why not Americans? Why do we have to go through a special process through Irish Embassy. I have some Aussie friends who could get their work holiday visa in minutes online.

  1. The above answers are correct. I have nothing to add except you can blame George Bush for cancelling the j1 visa.

I'm not being biased, I love America/ns But your government has a adopted a fairly puritanical approach to outside contact. It's a pity I would have loved to work there.

  2. we used to up untill 3 years ago, and then good old uncle Sam canceled the J1 visa, the above answers are correct, Australia and the other countries have a great relationship with us when it comes to the issuing of work visa's, the states on the other hand have made it almost impossible for us to work legally

  3. I believe that working holiday visas agreements are generally reciprocal. I don't believe the U.S. offers Ireland a working holiday visa, so that may be a reason why they don't offer one to the U.S..

  4. Sorry, but when Uncle Sam starts giving working visas to the Irish, then we'll start sending some working visas your way too. We offer visas to those other countries and they offer them in return.

If you're a professional and can command a salary (in excess of 60,000 euro I think), then you may be able to get a special visa, provided nobody in Ireland will take the job.

Other than that, I didn't realise that you could go through the embassy, so it's not all doom and gloom!
