Why doesn't a bag of popcorn pop all at the same time?

Why do different kernels take longer??

(I just wanted to give the "scientists" something to do on here...There's probably not an answer...Or IS there???Hmmmm)

  1. The reason why a bag of popcorn does not pop at the same time is very simple. there are millions and millions of tiny particles in the kernels and in the oil. some of these particles absorb more energy faster than others. these kernels will be the first to pop and may burn if left left in contact with heat. the last kernels to pop are probably the biggest and therefor they take the longest to heat up

  3. Footnote: never try to get all the kernels to pop, you'll just burn the rest! Enjoy.

  4. Popcorn kernels are different densities, and so it will naturally take them different times to pop.  Also, as with ANY kind of cooking, each one will absorb heat at a different rate.  It's the heat that makes the corn kernel pop.

    It doesn't take a scientist to know this. ... just someone who's a decent cook.  The answer is simple.  corn kernels are not exactly identical, as is true of all vegetables we grow.  they could only have a chance of popping all at once if all were physically exactly identical.

    Then, if you're doing them in a cook pot, the cookpot bottom and sides are not exactly identical in temperature in all areas.
