Why doesn't a transformer work with direct current? Why is an alternating current required?

  1. DC current does not form a field. A transformer requires a rising and collapsing field to cause induction.


  2. See Maxwell's Equations.  The electric field depends not on the magnetic field, but the CHANGE in the magnetic field.  If the magnetic field is constant, the electric field is zero.
