Why doesn't aluminum foil get hot?

  1. Its so thin that it does not have enough mass to hold heat, it is quickly transfered and dispersed throught the peice of foil.

    If you rolled it into a ball it would get quite hot.


  2. Aluminum foil does get hot - it just loses its heat very quickly because it's so thin. Metals (like aluminum) can conduct heat very well, meaning that they heat up quickly, but also cool down quickly.

  3. it conducts energy too well.  as soon as the foil hits the room-temperature air outside the oven, it loses the heat it gained too fast to burn you.  if it was real thick it would retain more heat energy though.

  4. it has a really low heat capacity, so it cools of really fast, but inside the oven and all, it does get hot, very quickly.
