  1. Most things are killed due to a strong electric shock because the voltage is high enough to cause a current to flow -through- their body. This causes muscle contractions and burning of tissue (hair, skin, muscle, etc.) If the current is high enough, it will interrupt the delicate electrical signals that tell your heart to beat. Your heart will stop, and you will die.

    When an electric eels discharges its shock, however, the voltage is not directed across or through the eels body, but rather along specialized organs along the eels flanks, keeping the eel completely safe from its own shock.
