Question:

Why doesn't my DVD player work with my RCA cables plugged into Plasma TV?

I only have RCA cables for my DVD player but when I plug them into the corresponding sockets on my plasma TV, nothing happens (it says no signal). If I plug the RCA cable into the YPbPr sockets (the blue, read, green sockets) I can get picture but no sound! Help!

  1. Some DVD players don't give you picture out of standard video (yellow plug) and component (red, green, blue plugs) at the same time and you can change this in the menu. The best way to run a DVD to your TV is via the component cable as it is a better quality picture. The component is only video and needs an audio cable (red & white) for sound.

  2. Since your dvd player has component outputs, that tells me it's progressive scan or perhaps upconverting and you have an HD tv. So, I wouldn't use the composite cables (the yellow rca or the black coax cable). Since you already have the component cables, use those. They'll give you a much better picture than the composite anyway. HDMI would be best, if your tv and dvd player have that connectivity.

The component cables (red, green, and blue) are for the video portion of the signal. You also have to hook up red and white audio cables from the dvd to the correct input on the tv. You may have to go into your DVD main menu and set it up for a 16:9 tv and progressive scan output (you'd have to read your manual since you didn't give us your DVD players model #).
