Three years ago my first right side molar was killing me due to the filling falling out and I was in pain. Well the dentist just cleaned the tooth area out and put temporary filling. Well after 5 months of having that done I had a bump above the tooth. I never thought anything of it and I even asked family and friends what it was. My fiancees mom told me it could be an abscessed but she wasn't sure since it didn't hurt me only when you pressed on the abcessed. I have called around so many different denitst they tell me I can pull it or have it root canal. The one thing that is stoping me is not having insurance to see what it is. I know im dumb for not going sooner since my teeth effect my over all health. So now some of my tooth cracked away can they still do a root canal? Can they pull an abscessed molar? I am going today finally to see what they can do for me.

  1. If an abcesd tooth and is left untreated for long it becomes chronic which wont pain instead will give you pain intermittently or when pressure is applied. This is bcoz the tabs ( if you have had any ) suppress the infection for a while. Depends on how your tooth is cracked the dentist can decide wether it can be root canal treated. Yes, an abcesd tooth can be extracted. Take care !

  2. An abscess is a pocket of bubble that fills with fluid(puss) because of an underlying infection.  It is usually related to infection getting into the nerve.

Usually they treat the abscess with antibiotics, then they can treat what is causing the abscess/infection.  Remember, an abscess is only a symptom of something bigger going on. Don't just think you can take the antibiotics and everything is all better.

Once the infection is under control, the dentist can evaluate what is the best way to treat the tooth.  This can be a regular filling, a root canal and then restoration, and if it is really bad,  extraction.  Most dentists prefer to save the tooth when at all possible.

Have them take an xray and work up a treatment plan so you know what your options are and what it may cost.  You could also see another dentist for a 2nd opinion
