Why doesn't my baby parakeet have stripes on his head (photo)?

Here he is at about 7 weeks old. He was also hand fed. His head is completely yellow, with indentations for layers of more feathers looking like shadows. His cere is soft like a baby. Thanks.

  1. When they are young, they don't have stripes on their heads because they aren't fully developed with markings and such. When they are a couple months old, they will start coming in. Cute birdieee by the way!

    Hope this helped=)

  2. ok both answers you have so far are wrong.   The budgie you pictured is a pied lutino.  The lutino color phase of the bird will not have stripes on the head.  The stripes are a good indicator of age, that much is true however the other 2 answers have it backwards.  the stripes on the head are on young birds.  The stripes will come all the way to the cere (fleshy part where the beak meets the head).  The stripes will gradually fade back to the top of the head and neck as the bird ages.  Kinda like when a guy goes bald.  Hope this over simplified answer helped you

  3. WOW GREAT PHOTO!! What a CUTE BIRD! Once a bird matures it will get its markings.. enjoy him.. he is precious!!
