Why doesn't my router settings password work?

I have a linksys router, and when I type in the gateway (192.168.1.1) is asks for the password, so I type it in (admin/admin) and it just asks for it again.

What's the deal?

clearly that is not the password.  Were it the proper user name and password you would be able to get in.

Perhaps you need to reset the unit to factory default conditions and use the factory default password.  Check the manual on the factory default user name and factory default password.  Do not blindly assume that all makers or that all lines of routers within the same maker use the same factory default password as they do not.
