Question:

Why doesn't my truck go in reverse?

I was driving my truck today and it started to make a loud grinding noise while in drive..then the ABS and Brake lite went on along with the traction lite. While parking it in the garage, it will not go in reverse, it just makes that grinding sound. I have a 2003 chevy avalanche and its a 1500.

What could be wrong with it?

Thanks in advance for any feedback..

  1. Your transmission is a 4L60E

The grinding noise that you're hearing is the reaction sun shell being stripped. that's why you don't have reverse .(unfortunatlly it's the weakest link in that transmission, very common ) GM has revised this part with a beefier (new & improved ) sun shell.

Unfortunatly the trans. has to come out and opened up to replace this part.

This is not an oil level, or line pressure issue as others have suggested, nor is it a gear set problem. (rebuilt way too many)

Depending on your mileage, you don't need a total overhaul to fix this problem.

    Sorry for the bad news

    good luck

  2. Check your ATF fluid level. Reverse requires the highest line pressure of all the gears to engage. If your fluid level is low or your pump is failing or even more common the 4L60 and 4L80 have a known problem concerning the line pressure regulator that can easily be fixed by dropping the trans pan. Anyhow, back on topic if your pressure is low reverse is the first to go.

  3. cuss of the cheapness should of bought a dodge

  4. the transmission is not functioning properly. it would be best to take it to a transmission shop or fix it yourself if you know how.

  5. Check the TBS if they have a recall.  Otherwise you will be out $4,000 for a tranny.

  6. Lower gear set in the trans has failed,it will have to be rebuilt
