Question:

Why doesn't our moon have a "name"?

We give names to other moons, but ours is the only one referred to as moon. Why? I'm hoping there's some cool and interesting story behind it. Feel free to throw in a guess or two.

  1. In the days when the Moon got its name, there were no others known.

Such names as Luna are merely translations of moon into other languages. Selene is the name of a Greek goddess associated with the Moon.

But today, perhaps, we ought to give it a name to distinguish it from all the other moons. What do you think of Alice?

  2. Its name is Luna.  The Sun is named Sol.

This is the reason behind naming moon-related things "lunar" and sun-related things "solar".

  3. It does.  In English it is Moon with a capital M.  In Spanish Luna.

  4. It dose have a name it is called the Moon. Just as our star is called the Sun. Calling our satilite the Moon is the same as calling jupiter satilita Io.

  5. The naming is to indentify things. Untill time of Galieleo, only known moon was that of earth. So there was no need for a name.

  6. Our moon's name is Luna and the sun's name is Sol.  Most people simply say, "the moon" or "the sun".

  7. "moon" is the name of it. it is a satellite. all other satellites are called moon as a known reference to ours unless it is man-made. i.e a car is really a motor vehicle

  8. because it depends on witch one is it is it a creasant one half all things like that

  9. moon 'Luna'

  10. It has a name. "Luna"

    The sun is "Sol"

    Earth is "Terra"

All of our solar system planets and moons have names.

  11. There's also Selene.

But there's just one Moon.  The Moon.

We call objects that orbit other planets moons after The Moon.

But, for the fun of it, create a "Name the Moon" web site, and solicit suggestions.  The IAU will ignore you, but it might be fun.

  12. Probably because the name was developed when civilization didn't know about other planets moons. So saying other planets have moons can be a slight misnomer, that is my guess anyway.
