Question:

Why doesn't "no" mean NO anymore?

Seems like any time I tell anyone "no" about anything these days, they immediately repeat themselves over and over and argue.

While I grew up , "no" meant NO - not "argue and threaten until you get your way".

Who or what is to blame for this?

  1. Eh, good question first of all.

I think that these days growing up there are less...consequences for arguing with your parents. There are only so many things you can do to a kid; you can put them in their room, take away their phone, but it's not like it used to be. You cannot hit your kid on the butt anymore or anything like that, or it will be child abuse.

The belt has been hung up for good, and so now kids are growing up in defiance of their parents, and that carries over to adulthood.

    That's my theory anyway.

  2. The "fact" that you do not know your own mind.

In my book, "no" mands "no"; otherwise, you'd say "maybe" or "possibly" or some other hedge word

  3. it means you are not assertive enough in saying NO and meaning it
